Ophthalmology part of Haiti relief

Port-au-Prince, Haiti

-Ophthalmologists, ophthalmic organizations, and companies operating in the ophthalmology arena are contributing to efforts to assist Haiti respond to and recover from the earthquake that occurred in January.

For instance, Abbott has pledged $2.5 million in grant funding and donations of pharmaceutical and nutritional products to humanitarian aid organizations. Initial support from the Abbott Fund included $150,000 in grants to four humanitarian aid partners: American Red Cross, CARE, Catholic Medical Mission Board, and Partners In Health.

Abbott also is working with AmeriCares, Catholic Medical Mission Board, Direct Relief International, Heart to Heart International, MAP International, Project Hope, and additional organizations to identify and distribute nutritional and pharmaceutical products. In addition, almost 30 Abbott volunteers in the Dallas area are planning to help the American Red Cross with fundraising and other activities to support the efforts of the organization in Haiti.

Also, the Canon Group, including Canon Inc., Canon U.S.A. Inc., and Canon Latin America Inc., has pledged about $220,000 to the Haiti relief and recovery efforts through donations to Red Cross organizations.

“A tragedy of this magnitude requires support from the global community, and it is our hope that our contribution, along with all of the aid coming in from around the world, will help the people of Haiti begin the rebuilding and healing process,” said Joe Adachi, president and chief executive officer, Canon U.S.A. Inc.
