Sherman practiced in New York for more than 50 years and was the founder of Manhattan Ophthalmology Associates.
Spencer E. Sherman, MD, a well-known ophthalmologist in New York, has passed away. He was 88.
Sherman practiced medicine in New York for more than 53 years, serving as a clinical professor and attending surgeon in the department of Ophthalmology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and attending surgeon at both the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital. He also founded Manhattan Ophthalmology Associates.
In 1970, Sherman was named chief of the Eye Department of the Hospital for Joint Diseases of New York and a consulting ophthalmologist for the United Nations. He was a founder of the Museum of Vision in San Francisco, California, of which the holdings include the Spencer E. Sherman, MD, Antique Ophthalmology Book Collection.1
Sherman also was an avid collector of antique ophthalmological instruments and memorabilia and donated his collection to Alcon Laboratories in Fort Worth, Texas
Born April 8, 1936, in New Jersey, he was a son of the late Phillip and Sydell Sherman. He graduated Cum Laude from Princeton University in 1958 and from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1962. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1963 to 1965.1
Sherman served as a guest lecturer at many leading medical institutions around the world and published textbooks and scientific articles in numerous journals. For his service to ophthalmology, Sherman received The Honor Award and The Service Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.2
Sherman enjoyed tennis, golf, and was an amateur artist, and enthusiastic singer. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Sue; 2 daughters, Sabrina McEvoy (Rob) and Cristine Robinson (Kelly); 5 grandchildren Elizabeth, Katie, Caroline, Charlotte, and Clay; and 1 sister, Pam Pantzer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother Ronald Sherman, MD.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on July 30 at Frank E. Campbell, 1076 Madison Ave, New York. A private graveside burial will follow. The family was scheduled to receive guests from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm July 29 at the funeral home.
