Washington, DC-The National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) has developed a new fact sheet that details the incidence of age-related eye disease.
The data on age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts were reported in the April 2004 issue of Archives of Ophthalmology and were prepared for the National Eye Institute (NEI) by the Eye Disease Prevalence Research Group.
Intended to educate legislators about the major public health problem of age-related eye disease and to provide support for increased NEI funding for vision research, the fact sheet also cites the NEI's updated estimate of the economic and societal cost of eye disease and vision impairment and emphasizes the impact of eye disease on the aging population. The NAEVR's Web site is http://www.eyeresearch.org/.
