Allergan launches preservative-free drops

Refresh Optive Advanced Preservative-Free Lubricant Eye Drops (Allergan) work on all three layers of the tear film to relieve dry eye symptoms.

Irvine, CA-Allergan Inc. has launched Refresh Optive Advanced Preservative-Free Lubricant Eye Drops, which feature the same formula as Refresh Optive Advanced, but without the use of a preservative.

The preservative-free formula works on all three layers of the tear film to relieve dry eye symptoms, to stabilize the lipid layer to help reduce tear evaporation, hydrate the aqueous layer, and provide an advanced lubricating and protective shield to the mucin layer, while further protecting epithelial cells from hypertonic stress.

“[The preservative-free drops are] a lipid-enhanced tear that offers the comfort of an aqueous tear, but works layer by layer to stabilize the tear film, delivering just enough lipid to relieve symptoms without causing a lot of blur,” said Joseph Vehige, OD, Allergan senior director, consumer eye care research and development. “By stabilizing the lipid layer, tear evaporation is significantly reduced.”
