WIO 2023: ICL and Clear Lens Exchange

Eva Kim, MD, spoke with our team to share insights from her presentation on ICL versus CLE at the Women in Ophthalmology Summer Symposium 2023 in Marco Island, Florida.

I'm David Hutton of Ophthalmology Times. Joining me today is Dr. Eva Kim who will present ICL and Clear Lens Exchange at the Women in Ophthalmology 2023 Summer Symposium. Thank you so much for joining us today. Tell us a little bit about your presentation.

Eva Kim, MD:

Thanks, David. I'm excited to be presenting on CLE versus ICL surgery. CLE standing for clear lens exchange or refractive lens exchange. I'm going to talk about the fact that they're both lens based refractive surgeries. I'm going to talk about how these are non-corneal refractive surgeries and perfect surgeries for anterior segment surgeons, especially anterior segment surgeons who are excited to become more involved with refractive surgery. But they perhaps get a little bit nervous about entering corneal refractive surgery. And so just presenting how these are perfect, almost gateway surgeries for refractive surgery for anterior segment surgeons. I'll talk about the difference in patient profiles, the advantages and disadvantages to the surgeries. So really excited to share this information with everyone.

David Hutton:

What makes this a special event?

Eva Kim, MD:

I am very excited to be attending WIO because it's actually my first WIO that I'm officially attending ever in my entire life. So I'm excited to not only be a speaker, but to be an attendee for the first time. It's a special event, I am assuming, because of the support and the empowerment that we'll be feeling as women physicians, and I am excited to see a lot of colleagues that I have known throughout my career and just to feel that support.

David Hutton:

Are there any topics that you're particularly interested in during this event?

Eva Kim, MD:

I'm very excited to learn a little bit more about some of the MIGs related, or to hear some of the MIGs related talks from my colleagues. And also I am a uveitis specialist, but have been a little more active in cataract and refractive over the past five years so I'd love to hear those updates as well.
