Snowmass Retina and Eye 2025: Ronald Frenkel, MD, previews interactive learning and innovation amid winter fun

The 2025 Snowmass Retina and Eye Meeting, scheduled from March 24 to 28 in Snowmass, Colorado, will provide ophthalmologist-attendees with a unique opportunity to combine advanced learning with winter recreation.

Ronald Frenkel, MD, Course Director, sat down with Ophthalmology Times to discuss the conference's dedication to cutting-edge advancements in ophthalmology, particularly retina and cataract, glaucoma, and the anterior segment. “We wanted to get an update on the latest things and the newest things in retina and in ophthalmology,” he explained, highlighting the meeting’s interactive format to maximize learning.

The agenda will include updates on drug-delivery platforms for glaucoma, MIGS, pseudoexfoliation, and presbyopia-correcting IOLs. Keynote speakers, such as Leon Herndon, MD, will deliver the Epstein Lecture on advanced glaucoma, and Cathleen McCabe, MD, will presenting the Ridley Lecture on cataract surgery. Retina-focused sessions will include David Sarraf, MD’s Machemer Lecture on reducing pigment epithelial detachment and retinal pigment epithelium tear risks, along with discussions on breakthroughs in macular disease and geographic atrophy treatments. “We’re real current on that,” Frenkel noted. Additionally, artificial intelligence will be a key theme, with talks on AI’s role in diabetic retinopathy and panel discussions that encourage active audience participation. “Your voice and your questions will be heard,” he emphasized.

The event will cater to a wide-ranging audience, including retina specialists, comprehensive ophthalmologists, and glaucoma or cataract surgeons. Attendees can customize their experience by selecting program segments of interest. The schedule will include seven-hour daily breaks for activities, such as skiing, fostering informal yet valuable networking opportunities. “I’ve learned a lot of great things just on the chair lift,” Frenkel added.

With its new venue at the Viceroy Hotel, this 15th annual meeting will continue its tradition of deep engagement. “We’ve tried to hit really important topics and update those topics by just all-star faculty,” Frenkel concluded.
