San Francisco, CA-The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) announced the decision to appoint Ronald Smith, MD to head the academy's Secretariat for Global Alliances. The secretariat will provide physician leadership in guiding the academy's international programs and will play an important role in program planning.

"The Global Education Secretariat will help us to meet the needs of ophthalmologists internationally and provide important leadership for our growing number of international programs," said H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr., MD, executive vice president of the academy.

The newly created position, secretariat, means that global alliances will have representation on the academy's Committee of Secretaries, making it easier for the group to interact and coordinate with other secretariats.

"I am honored to be a part of the academy's international efforts," said Dr. Smith.
