Top 10 U.S. eye-healthy cities

Check out the latest results from the 2016 VSP Vision Care Eye Health Index!

The results are in for the 2016 VSP Vision Care Eye Health Index. With 77 million members, VSP is the largest not-for-profit vision benefits provider in the United States and is in its fourth year of conducting the study. Rankings are based on the percentage of VSP members who received an eye exam in 2015 in cities with at least 100,000 VSP members. See if your city made the list!

 

10. Tulsa, Oklahoma

Fear not, Oklahomans! Oklahoma has two cities in the top 10 eye-healthy cities list.

9. Denver, Colorado

There's a reason Colorado's 40-foot blue bear landmark outside of the Colorado Convention center is not wearing glasses! The state is also a top contender for the nation's eye-healthiest cities, with Colorado appearing twice in the top 10 list.

8. Fayetteville, Arkansas

Sports fans will be happy to hear the Razorbacks may be some of the most eye-healthy football players in the nation, with Fayetteville residents ranking number 8 in the top 10 list.

7. Colorado Springs, Colorado

Colorado Springs, home of the United States Air Force Academy, ranks number 7 on the eye-healthy cities list. We can all rest assured that our Air Force pilots are training in one of the most eye-healthy cities in the nation.

6. Redding, California

Redding is reknown for its Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay, one of the most unique bridges in the world. Thanks to Redding's eye-health conscious population, it is now also in the spotlight for another great reason.

5. Raleigh, North Carolina

If there are only two things to know about Raleigh, here they are: Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina, is often mistakenly called “Raleigh-Durham,” which is the name of the nearby airport, not the city; and it is also one of the eye-healthiest cities in America as a majority of its residents routinely get annual eye exams!

4. Des Moines, Iowa

The Iowa Women of Achievement Bridge in Des Moines is a 400-foot pedestrian and bicycle bridge with a glass bottom, allowing its residents to get a great view of the water below-especially since the residents there are in the fourth healthiest cities in America for eyecare.

The VSP 2016 Eye Health Index also found women (58%) are more likely to have annual eye exams than their male counterparts (42%).

3. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Oklahoma City, known as “The Big Friendly,” is a top contender for the nation's most eye-health conscious cities, meaning it may also be a contender for the least burnt-out ophthalmologists!

2. Boise, Idaho

And yet another reason for sports fans to celebrate! Boise is home to Bronco Stadium, where the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, a post-season football bowl game held annually for nearly two decades, is played and televised on ESPN. It is also the second most eye-healthy city in the nation!

1. Reno, Nevada

Big things come in small packages! It's likely that no one betted on "The Biggest Little City" to also be the nation's most eye-healthy city for 2016. The next time you think of Reno, think of your eyes!
